He hates the idea, it’s so antithetical to his personality, but he loves his wife and goes along. He even shoots his rifle, and accidentally grazes a rabbit.

Horrified, he puts the rabbit into his game bag, hoping to save the rabbit when he can get away from this bunch of boors. And then the rabbit begins talking to him. Does that make you think this is too hokey to be believed? Well, don’t. First, the rabbit doesn’t really talk. Somehow, there is mental communication, but not talking. That’s not weird at all, right? Well, OK, it is weird, but Desarthe makes it work. One of the hunters, Dumestre, gets stuck in a hole, and Tristan and rabbit stay with him while the others go for help.

During the long wait, Tristan considers his past life, he and Dumestre have a revealing conversation, and Tristan and the rabbit commune about the nature of humans and animals. This is an odd little story, sometimes too obscure, but thought provoking. The story of a outsider on a hunting trip with men from the French village he and his wife have moved to is framed by a dialogue between him and a rabbit about the nature of the human condition.

As the story progresses we get images of the principal narrators early years, his relations with his mother and the world, and there is also some melodrama of the “Straw Dogs” school.

The plot frequently takes strange inexplicable turns usually motivated by inexplicable external events and a key plot element requires a ludicrous suspension of disbelief. Relatively well constructed and brief, “Hunting Party” appears on the surface to be talking about deep philosophical matters, but it is rather pedestrian as a whole with a series of stereotypes re-enacting a stereotypical plot while one of the characters has a reverie regarding the past.

The translation is adequate, though it has its problems, for example something is described as like the Virgin of Quattrocento rather than a Quattrocento Virgin. I'm not sure why but this short hunting party agnes desarthe mobi epub free download novella really didn't hold my attention and it took forever to get through. There's an interesting premise but all the back and forth between past and present, rabbit to person, it jumped around a bit too much for my tastes.

That and I found the side stories to be filled with details that just weren't pertinent to the story at all and did nothing to really contribute to or move the story forward, which irritated me in such a short tale. I enjoyed the overall writing style, it was sort of quiet yet still powerful. This is worth a read as it explores some interesting points of view, just be hunting party agnes desarthe mobi epub free download for a slow-moving narrative.

Sweet story of a man who goes hunting to prove his manhood, and how his "victim" - a rabbit he wounds -- starts to talk to him, like an alter ego. It's a Velveteen Rabbit story for adults. That's a children's book I highly recommend. It's a pleasant read, more insightful than the usual run of light reading. And it's very short.

You can finish it in one rainy day, like I did. I brought this on holiday, hunting party agnes desarthe mobi epub free download finished reading it before the plane even landed! The hunting party agnes desarthe mobi epub free download telling of the tales of a young man, sometimes via the voice of a rabbit, are both very imaginative and also acute observations on the male species.

The author is very sympathetic to the often conflicted male psyche, and as mentioned by another reviewer, this accomplishment not very often revealed in traditional story telling. It brings in many aspects of the young mans life, and they are not always comfortable. However, the writing is engaging, and lively, and carries one through it. As mentioned, I literally could not put this compelling and good read down! Hunting Party by Agnes Desarthe is a very unusual novella about a man and a rabbit, both dealing with an inner struggle between their natures and what is expected of them.

The author hooks readers immediately by beginning with the POV of the rabbit and switches to Tristan, who is constantly experiencing flashbacks to his mother and his past during the hunt. As the story moves slowly forward, hunting party agnes desarthe mobi epub free download, a member of their hunting party is injured and Tristan imagines the rabbit is speaking with him about their predicament.

For some reason I can't quite explain, Tristan reminds me of Candide in the story by Voltaire, having to deal with one problem after another In any case, I found the Hunting Party to be somewhat satirical, hunting party agnes desarthe mobi epub free download, but I'm uncertain if that is what the author had intended.

The story held my attention throughout, but I am disappointed with the ending. I would have preferred some closure within the hunting party itself. I think Tristan should've thrown the rabbit at Emma. The ending seemed rather bland compared to the rest of novella, as if the author grew tired of writing and simply stopped.

Tristan, a non hunter, goes hunting with his gun-totting friends; he wounds a rabbit and tucks the vulnerable creature in his game bag. When one of his hunter friends slips into the proverbial "rabbit hole" and disappears, the other hunters go for help leaving Tristan and his pal floundering.

All turns to chaos with an approaching storm and flood as Tristan reflects on his injured pal and the fate of the rabbit who has more sense than Tristan and most of the characters in this abstraction of a book. Thankfully short, this jumpy episodic story ends humanely, leaving the reader confused but confident in the wisdom of the animal kingdom. One person found this helpful. See all reviews.
